Verl Arthur Oberlin's Obituary
Verl Arthur Oberlin, 93, of New Haven died on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Kingston Residence of Fort Wayne. Born on August 8, 1918 in Butler, he was the son of the late King and Lula Oberlin. He received degrees from Ball State Teachers College and Saint Francis University. He taught school for 42 years, 31 of which were at New Haven High School and had formerly taught at Butler High School. Verl was a member of the National Education Association and Indiana Retired Teachers Association. He was an Army Air Corp. veteran of WWII and served as Lieutenant Colonel for the 95th bomb squadron. He was a member of American Legion Post 47 and Howard Bandelier VFW Post 2457. He was also a member of the New Haven United Methodist Church, where he served as a teacher and choir member for many years.
He is survived by his children, Mary (Marvin) Petersen of Wickenberg, Ariz., James (Marta) Oberlin of Alamink, Penn., Joseph (Cindy) Oberlin of New Haven, and Thomas (Marie) Oberlin of Woodburn; brother, Duane Oberlin of Fort Wayne; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife, Prudence in 1997; and son John in 2010.
Funeral service is 10 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2012 at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven. Chaplain Robin LaRue officiating. Calling is 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial is in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, New Haven with military honors. Preferred memorials are to New Haven United Methodist Church.
