Sitting here trying to think of a single memory that stands out but without success. I'm remembering the path that used to go between your house and ours. I probably tracked my share of mud across Maxine's kitchen floor. The mulberry tree in the front yard that someone would slip under and get mulberry stains in their clothes each year until Maxine had it cut down. I recall picking strawberries, going to the lake on weekends sometimes and having contests to see who could catch the most fish on ONE horse-weed worm, and going to Fort Wayne on Friday nights shopping. Mom and I visited with John and Maxine at the farm a couple years ago. Maxine could recall people and happenings from way back. Just a remarkable lady. Our condolences to all of the Van Horns - Paul, Dave, Susie, Dick, John, Jan and your families.
Just recalled a funny story. One day I was home from school with one of many ear infections. Mom saw Maxine out in the field trying to get a steer back inside the fence so she sent me out to help her. The steer made a couple dodges before we finally got him back inside the fence. After one of the dodges Maxine said "I think it's time to make beefsteaks out of old Beef Stake."
