Leila was my aunt and godmother. Through our conversations over the years, she showed her joy of life, love of creativity, and great passion for her family. What pride she took in her Christmas winter wonderland. Easter was another celebration with decorations to delight. She enjoyed talking of family vacations and dinners. At Christmastime, she worked with gusto and joy, making and decorating Christmas cookies. Many of which became gifts for family and friends. She loved cheese sandwiches on rye bread, apple fritters, and carrot cake. Her morning ritual was to greet her portrait of Peggy. Now she can have those wonderful conversations with Wayne and Peggy in heaven.

Karen and I first knew Leila and her husband Wayne when we visited his mother Mary Judt at Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Wayne Trace where I was pastor. Then we were happy to meet up with her again at St. Peter’s where we became members there after I retired. Leila was such a faithful church goer, and we greeted her there just the Sunday before she went to be with her Lord a few days later. Even though it was not easy for her to get around, she was such a great example of making sure she was in her church on Sunday. We will miss her friendly hellos ( and her singing birthday calls), but we are confident Leila is now with her Savior. We are sorry we will be out of town over the weekend and will miss her funeral.

My husband, Norman, was Leila's nephew. I remember her from the first time I met her at the farm celebrating her mother's birthday, Norman and I were too early for a square dance at the Hayloft so he took me to his parents house for his grandmother's birthday. Every year Leila would call us on our birthday and anniversary and sing to us. She would send us copies of newspaper articles that were printed in the Ft. Wayne newspapers when our children were in 4-H showing their placings and pictures. I will miss my conversations with her on the phone. Norman and I enjoyed having her at family gatherings and recently taking her family funerals. Leila is the last Berning of that generation. She was a knowledge of family history.

My father was Leila's first cousin, but she was only six years older than me. I remember when I was a child, Leila and her brother Fritz stopped at our house and surprised us at Halloween being in costume. We lived on a farm and never had trick or treaters. I'm not sure if we recognized them immediately, but it was a fun event that I remember almost 80 years later. My sister was a flower girl in Leila's sister's wedding. Life went on and we lost track of each other until a few years ago. My husband and I stopped in to visit Leila when we were in Fort Wayne for another occasion. After that visit, we talked on the phone on our birthdays several times. I'll miss hearing from her. May God comfort all those who mourn.

Leila was a wonderful neighbor. She shared stories about her life any time we stopped by and we enjoyed hearing about her childhood experiences on the farm.
