John E. Bennett's Obituary
John E. Bennett, 71, passed away after a battle with cancer on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at home with his family by his side. Born in Woodburn, he was the son of the late Willis and Ruth (Roemke) Bennett. He attended Emanuel Lutheran Church, New Haven. He served his country in the US Marine Corps during Vietnam and was a member of American Legion Post 330. He retired in 2016 after 41 years with the New Haven Fire Department with 16 of those years serving as Fire Chief. After retirement he joined the staff at Harper's Community Funeral Home where he was been since 2016. He collected Fire memorabilia and his grandchildren were his everything. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Peggy; son, Chris (P.J.) Bennett; grandchildren, Ryan and Aaron Bennett, Jake and Claire Crozier; and siblings, Beverly Hoeppner of Fort Wayne, Karolyn Bennett of Woodburn, Bruce Bennett of Arizona, and Mike (Charlotte) Bennett of Tennessee. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Katrina in 1977; and brother, Jack Bennett. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 800 Green St, New Haven visitation one hour prior. Visitation is also 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Woodburn with military honors. Preferred memorials are to New Haven Fire and EMS and Emanuel Lutheran Church.
