Dorothy (Bartle) Langley's Obituary
Dorothy (Bartle) Langley, 92, went to her Heavenly Home, Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home, Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne on July 18, 1921, she was the daughter of the late David A. and Lulu (Putt) Bartle Sr. She was Salutatorian of the Class of 1939 at Leo High School. On August 17, 1941, Dorothy and Walter J. Langley were married at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, where she was a member for over 72 years. While Walter was away in World War II, she worked at G. C. Murphy Co., and later General Electric. Dorothy was a member of the Ladies Aid of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, and a past president of the Ridge Road Home Ec. Club. For several years they enjoyed riding motorcycles with family and friends. She retired from Fort Wayne Community Schools in 1983 after 17 years as a teacher's aide at Croninger. Dorothy and Walter volunteered at the Fort Wayne VA for 43 years, where Dorothy received The Presidential Award for Service. They also belonged to the Promenaders Square Dance Club for over 30 years, and enjoyed dancing to Carl Geels calling the sets. They also participated in 8 Elder Hostels, and attended 17 square dance conventions in several states, including California, Texas, and South Dakota. Dorothy and Walter received the Longest Married Couple in Indiana Award in 2013, from the World Wide Marriage Encounter Group. She enjoyed gardening, dancing, reading, IU basketball, and family gatherings.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Walter; children, Barbara Fischer and Walter "Butch" (Cathea) Langley, Jr. both of Fort Wayne, Patricia (Al) Lautzenheiser of Decatur; siblings, Eileen Shidler of Michigan and Jack (Barb) Bartle of Grabill; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Shane Langley; son-in-law, Tom Fischer, Sr.; and siblings, Dave Bartle Jr. and Jerry Sauder.
Funeral service is 1 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2013 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 7710 E. State Blvd., Fort Wayne with calling one hour prior. Rev. Steve Ahlersmeyer officiating. Calling is also 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven. Burial in the church cemetery. Preferred memorials are to St. Peter's Lutheran Church Debt Fund.
