When I was writing the "Looking Back" column for the New Haven News, Don told me it was the first thing he looked at when the paper came. He said, "I don't want to know what happened this week, I want to know what happened way back when." He and my brother, Stan Rosswurm were grade and high school buddies. Warm wishes to his family. Dear Cheviron Family,
It is with a smile that I remember Don. He was a custodian at New Haven Elementary School when I taught there. The staff had so many laughs with Don! His co-custodian at the time was Wilma Teegarten. They were a good team. One time Wilma and Don were painting the posts in the cafeteria. Some how the ladder slipped and the bucket of blue paint fell on Wilma's head and down her clothes. Don had to take Wilma to the cafeteria sink and use the sprayer to get the paint out of her hair!
Another funny story was the time when he somehow got locked in an upstairs room while cleaning at night. He called and called “Wilma” (much like Fred Flintstone) so Wilma would come and release him.
I remember how fond he was of his daughter, Ellen. She would pack his lunches. He would say, “Well I'm going down to see what Ellen packed in my lunch tonight.” She always packed a lot and gave him many choices. You just knew how much he loved her.
Your father always had a smile and could laugh at himself. As several of my fellow teachers learned of his passing and remembered him, we all had happy memories. What a great thing to be remembered by the happiness you to gave to others! He was a good person.
I am thankful that I got to work with him, and that he was my friend.
Sincerely,
Jan Cave

Dear Cuz, I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Don was such a lovely human being. My first memories of him were in my youth when he took the time to talk to us kids. He was always so friendly, kind and such a gentle soul. Wish I knew more about his Navy WWII days! Wonder if my Mom ever interviewed him for her WWII book A 21 Story Salute? Don & Clem are reunited again. They are missed dearly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you all for your great loss from what Tom Brokaw called the greatest generation.
To the Cheviron Family,
We are so very sorry to hear of your family loss and your family is in our prayers.
Tayla, do you think Don is carrying Clem across that threshold again? I do, and I hope you can find comfort in knowing that they are together again and forever.
