Darwin C. Markley, 90, passed away Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Parkview Hospital - Randallia, Fort Wayne. Born on February 13, 1931 in Wells County, he was the son of the late Clive and Dorothy (Roof) Markley. He graduated from Read Obituary
Mr. Markley was my first male teacher. Having had only female teachers, I was nervous, but he put all of us at ease. I loved his 5th grade class, and I truly believe he was instrumental in developing my love of learning. Carol Nelson Christopher
I worked with Darwin as a School Psychologist for many years. I also was fortunate enough to play bridge with him. He was a man I always respected and admired. May he Rest In Peace. Stephen Heine.
I was a student of Mr. Markley’s in the fifth grade in 1957-1958. I have thought of him often over the years as I remembered that year as a good experience. He simply was so very nice! The thing that keeps me thinking about him is the way he taught us to tie the strings of our Weekly Reader books. He taught us to instead just looping the string over once to loop it twice so it would hold better to make tying the bow easier. A pretty simple thing but I can’t tell you how often I have used that trick and every time I would say to myself “thank you Mr. Markley! “ My sympathy to all of his family. Mr. Markley was principal at Highland Terrace for all three of my children. Not only was he a great principal but a wonderful person. He was always fair and understanding. He will be missed by many.
Though I taught in East Allen County schools for almost 30 years, I never had the privilege of working with Darwin but he was so very respected. Everyone I know who did work with him, loved him as a principal. I did, however, enjoy learning from his father, Clive Markley, at Rockcreek Elementary and High School in Wells County. He was a beloved teacher and mentor so the genes must run in the family. Sorry for your loss.
