Waneta I. Gerig's Obituary
Waneta I. Gerig, 87, died Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Golden Years Homestead, Fort Wayne. Born on December 4, 1924 in Whitley, County she attended the Woodburn Missionary Church. She attended Roanoke High School and later worked at General Electric in Fort Wayne. There she met Les Gerig and they were married in Rochester, New York on September 9, 1943. They spent several years in the United States Air Force and then returned to Woodburn to raise their family. There she was a homemaker and loving mother to seven children.
She is survived by her children, Lester (Vicki) Gerig of Decatur, Connie (Melvin) Downs and Dean (Cheryl) Gerig both of Woodburn, Terry Gerig of Fort Wayne, Gloria (Oriean) Clayton of Tecumseh, Mich., Randy (Irene) Gerig of Woodburn, and Dennis Gerig of Kimmel; siblings, Wayne and Ronnie Fairchild; 23 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Lester Gerig in 2000; mother, Myrtle DeWitt; father, Herb Fairchild; sister, Carolyn Gilgen; brothers, Robert, William, Jack, Floyd and Donnie; daughter-in-law, Irene; and great granddaughter, Katie.
Funeral service is 10 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2012 at Woodburn Missionary Church, 5108 Bull Rapids Rd., Woodburn with calling one hour prior. The Rev. Gerald Ringenberg officiating. Calling is also 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven. Entombment in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne. Preferred memorials are to Woodburn Missionary Church or Cancer Services of Allen County.
