Stanley J. Harper's Obituary
Stanley J. Harper, 87, of Syracuse, formerly of New Haven, passed away August 24, 2013 at Visiting Nurse Hospice Home in Fort Wayne. He was born May 20, 1926 in New Haven to Emmet E. and Fannie G. (nee Greenawalt) Harper.
Stan was a WWII veteran, proudly serving in the US Navy. He graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago and was co-owner of E. Harper & Son Funeral Home in New Haven (1948-1972). He then purchased the Sleepy Owl Bar & Restaurant in Syracuse which he operated from 1972 to 1976. Stanley married Cindy Bucher on May 16, 1976 and they opened Harper's Beach Bar on Dewart Lake in 1978, where they enjoyed serving their family and friends until 1986.
Stan and Cindy wintered at Ft. Myers Beach, FL for 37 years. He loved to deer hunt every season until he was 82 years of age.
Stan was a life member of the North Webster American Legion Post 253, Past Commander of the New Haven American Legion Post 330, and a life member of the Syracuse VFW Post 1342.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Cindy, daughters: Valerie Harper of Port Charlotte, FL and Shelly (Denny) Corl of Syracuse, son: J.K. Harper of San Francisco, CA, and granddaughter Ashley Harper of Port Charlotte, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Mary Elaine Rickard; brothers: George E., James Keith, Bruce M., and Homer H. Harper.
A graveside service will be 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Milford; Pastor Mike Smith of Ft. Wayne will officiate. Military Honors by The United States Navy and North Webster American Legion Post 253.
