I don't even know where to begin to convey what Joan meant to me. She and Dale took me in when my family was far away. They were my safe place to land in a town where I knew almost no one at first. They taught me to be kind, laugh a lot, and how to tease with kindness. How to cook (Matt thanks you), and to find the fun in the little things. Any hat could be a party hat to Joan. And a plastic tub could be a fun place to watch tv. She loved to remind me to be kind to everyone, because no matter how normal we think we are, we're all a little "kooky" in some way.
And Dale, you've been such an example of how to care for someone: in sickness and health, for richer for poorer, in the good times and bad. You're such an inspiration!
Above all, Joan taught me how to totally and completely love the Lord. Though we are sad and miss her smile, we are so happy for her. She's in the bliss of heaven and soaking it all up. See you there, Joan! Well done, good and faithful servant!
