John J. Kortenber, D.V.M.'s Obituary
John J. Kortenber D.V.M., 92, formerly of New Haven died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne, he was the only son to the late Dr. W.C. and Clara Kortenber, and lived his entire life in the New Haven area. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, New Haven. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1941. He was a practicing veterinarian in New Haven for 27 years and retired in 1983 from the Indiana State Board of Health as a Veterinary Meat Inspector. At one time, he was the co-owner of the New Haven Bowling Alley and the Trion Tavern.
He is survived by his children, Robert (Valerie) Kortenber of Sparks, NV, Gerald (Jane) Kortenber of Sarasota, FL., William (Donna) Kortenber of New Haven, Donald (Patti) Kortenber, Roseann (Donald) Simmons, Marcia (William) Widdifield, and Catherine (Albert) Anzini all of Fort Wayne; step-sons, Gerald (Connie) Schuckel of Fort Wayne, William (Helen) Schuckel of Dunken, British Columbia, Canada, and Charles (Sally) Schuckel of Battle Creek, Mich; 18 grandchildren; ten step grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his 1st wife, Mary Catherine Daly Kortenber in 1983; 2nd wife, Marie Voors Schuckel Kortenber in 1998; daughter and son-in-law, Marilou and Ross Derheimer; a grandson and one step grandson.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 943 Powers St., New Haven, with calling one hour prior to service. Father James Seculoff officiating. Calling is also 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven with a rosary at 5 p.m. Burial is in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, New Haven. Preferred memorials are to the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Parkview Home Health & Hospice, or St. Anne’s Retirement Community.
