Many Sundays at church, I sat in front of Hugh and his friend, Darwin Markley. They would say hello and share smiles. Hugh was such a dapper man with ramrod straight posture. One Sunday he told the story of how, after he returned home after his military service, his father suggested that the town of New Haven needed a jeweler and that he might learn the trade. He thought it over and took a course in New York (I believe). The Pensinger Jewelry Store was opened and New Haven was privileged to have an excellent jeweler for many years!
I am very happy to have gotten to know Hubert in the last few years coming to town to visit Dick and Margaret Crosley. Every Tuesday they went to Pizza Hut for lunch with the gang. We went along. That is where I got to know him through that time and my husband Scott. He was a very humble man, sweet in every way yet with a most distinguished past. He was very talented and gifted. He also was a carver of which I am happy to have one of his pieces which I posted a photo of. Scott looked up to him and enjoyed listening to his stories. We are proud to have known such a man.
