Helen Louise Purvis' Obituary
Helen Louise Purvis, 100, of New Haven, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Ashton Creek, Fort Wayne. Born in West Layette, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Clara Belle (Venus) Jones. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, New Haven. She was a 1942 graduate of West Lafyette High School and went on to work as a billing clerk for the West Lafayette Telephone Company and then was the secretary for the Naval Training Department at Purdue University. After moving to New Haven, she owned and operated Purvis Drugstore with her husband of 23 years, Charles, who preceded her in death in 1970. An active community member she was Deputy Clerk - Treasurer and went on to be City Clerk - Treasurer of New Haven and served on the New Haven Chamber Board of Directors for many years. She was also a charter member of the New Haven Women's Club, member of the American Business Women's Association, Organized the New Haven Development Corp in 1983, and volunteered for the Republican Committee. She was a 25-year Fort Wayne Komets season ticket holder, and enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, bowling, and playing the piano and organ. She especially loved spoiling her grandsons.
She is survived by her children, Patti (Danley "Tucker") Schiebel, Kathleen Scherer, and James Purvis; grandsons, Jared (Andrea), Logan, Cameron, and Dylan Scherer; step grandchildren, Tiffany (Bill) Hanley and Chad (Amber) Schiebel; great grandchildren, Decker, Macy, Tatum, Tustin, and Tinley Scherer; and several step great grandchildren, including Katie, Jakob, Raegen, and Graciana. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Nelson and Ralph "Bud" Jones.
Memorial service is 10:30 am Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 800 Green St., New Haven with visitation one hour prior. Visitation is also 3 to 8 pm, Monday, April 27, 2026, at Harper's Community Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 9230 E., New Haven. Inurnment in Concordia Cemetery Gardens, Fort Wayne.
