George J. Dirig's Obituary
George J. Dirig, 102, of New Haven, died Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Provena Sacred Heart Home, Avilla. Born in Fort Wayne he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (nee. Steiger) Dirig. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, New Haven. He started working for C.V. Dirig Sheet Metal in 1923 and retired in 1973 after 50 years. In 2009 the sheet metal trade honored him for his 75 years of continuous service. He was the oldest living sheet metal worker in the United States.
George is survived by his children, Gene (Shirley) Dirig of Huntertown, Carl Dirig and Mary Louise (Tom) Crandall both of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Flora M. in 1995; daughter, Ellie Brandstetter; five brothers; and three sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial is 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 943 Powers St., New Haven with calling one hour prior. The Father James Seculoff officiating. Calling is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven. Burial is in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Preferred memorials are to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
