Alfred Joseph "Al" Schmidt's Obituary
Alfred Joseph “Al” Schmidt, 84, of New Haven passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at home with his family by his side. Born in Allen County, he was the son of the late Norman and Ella (Temple) Schmidt. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and was a member of American Legion Post 330. He retired in 1992 from Rea Magnet Wire after 42 years. He loved to “tinker”, the outdoors, fishing, playing cards, and helping others. Having a deep faith, Al would often say, “The dear Lord was my main crutch through life.”
He is survived by his children, Dianna Schmidt, Steven (Lorie Chambers) Schmidt, and Cynthia (Paul) Sabrack all of Fort Wayne, and DeWayne (KayAnn) Schmidt of Ossian; step-children, Alvin (Deb) Bowers of Monroeville, Cathy Glover, Cindy Bowers, Laurie (Chad) Black all of Fort Wayne, Robert Bowers and Brenda Bowers both of New Haven; siblings, Robert (Nan) Schmidt of Leesburg, William (Jane) Schmidt and Ruth Pyle both of Fort Wayne, Mildred Sorg of Hoagland, Carol Doehrman of New Haven, and Lucille (Jerry) Anderson of Wisconsin; six grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and six step great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his wives, Joan (Confer) Schmidt in 1995 and Delores (Bowers) Schmidt in 2015; daughter, Deborah Schmidt; step daughter, Linda Bowers; and siblings, Marie Esquivel, John Schmidt, and George Schmidt.
Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven with calling one hour prior. Pastor Keith Schreffler officiating. Calling is also 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial in Oaklawn Cemetery, Ossian. Preferred memorial to Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana, Disabled American Veterans, or Donors Choice.
