William “Bill” James Platter, 82, went home to the Lord on Friday, May 19, 2017. Born on April 24, 1935, he was the son of William F. Platter and Betty (Neumann) Platter-Moldthan. An active member of St. John’s Holy Name Society. He loved supervising their famous fish fry and all building projects at the church. He was also a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. Bill was a Korean War veteran, serving eight years in the US Navy Seabees and retired as a Master Sergeant from the Indiana Air Guard after 30 years. A supervisor at US Steel in Gary, he was also an architectural engineer for the building of Summit One Square and the General Motors plant. A Scout Master with the Boy Scouts for over 30 years. He enjoyed taking Eagle Scouts to the Philmont Scout Ranch, numerous jamborees, and lead the scouts who volunteered at the Johnny Appleseed Festival for many years. An avid Civil War buff, he taught Civil War history at Ivy Tech having an extensive research collection. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol; children, William (Kathi) Platter, Julia Leatherman, Daniel Platter, Jeannine (Ron) Lipinski, Jeanette (Darren) Yerks, Jennifer Kage, Michael (Rachel) Platter, Joyceann (Ivor) Finnegan, Christopher Platter, and Stephen Platter; siblings, Elizabeth (William) Hoyt, Linda (Richard) Bohde, Penny Larimore, Nancy Didier, and Thomas Platter; 33 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. Preceded in death by his brother, Edward Moldthan. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 943 Powers St., New Haven with calling one hour prior to service. Father Bill Sullivan officiating. Calling is also 2 to 4 and 6 to 8p.m. Monday at E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven with a vigil at 3:30 p.m. Burial in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, New Haven. Preferred memorials are to the church or Holy Name Society.
