Jerry VanMeter, 60, departed this life peacefully on August 15, 2010 at his home in Chandler. Jerry grew up in New Haven, IN where he met his wife of 38 years, Cheryl, she survives. They moved to Arizona in 1988 from Colorado Springs, CO and started an acoustical materials business in 1990 that required extensive travel to projects nationwide. Many contractors, architects, trade professionals, and valued employees are included in Jerry’s long list of friends and acquaintances. He was a very social person who loved golf, fishing, a good joke, and an occasional roll of the dice at the craps table. He will always be remembered for his warm smile and big heart and will be very much missed by all that knew him. Gula Louise Rice (Frakes, Herber) 97, born to John and Blanche Frakes on July 3, 1912 passed to her Lord from the loving arms of her family at home, and began her eternal life in His presence on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 3:11 p.m.
Graduating from Good Samaritan Hospital in Kokomo in 1934, she would spend many years caring for others as a Registered Nurse beginning at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, private duty nursing in Florida, serving as 2nd Lt in the Army, and retiring from Veterans Hospital in Fort Wayne, in 1974. Gula, known as ‘Nana’ by her many friends and family, and even casual acquaintances, enjoyed a full life. Widowed at the age of 32, she was left to raise her twin girls on her own. She willingly made many sacrifices for her girls. Her life was one of strength and commitment; a life of goodness and of always being there for others. She shared many good times with her family, including cruising to Alaska with her twins and White Water rafting at the age of 80. She enjoyed vacationing in Key West, riding scooters, and relaxing in the Jacuzzi…at the age of 90. At age 88, she proudly purchased, with much excitement, her first horse, Saunter. She enjoyed watching Saunter and showering her with affection and ‘treats’ on the horse farm of Mary and Bob where Nana lived for the past 14 years. She enjoyed going to the barn and watching Saunter and her first foal frolicking in the pasture. Nana was an avid bridge player and a charter member of the New Haven Women’s Club. She enjoyed spending many hours knitting, beginning with baby blankets, sweaters, and scarves, as well as beautiful king size bed coverlets for her grandchildren. She patiently worked with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to pass on her passion of knitting. She was a longtime member of New Haven United Methodist Church and attended Blackhawk Ministries. She will be missed more than words can express by those who love her. Nana has been an inspiration to all and has shared with and instilled her values into the lives of her entire family. Her legacy will live on forever with wonderful memories and a family history shared through stories and photos passed down from one generation to the next. Her strength and commitment to living a life of goodness and of being there for others will pass to many generations to come.
She is survived by her ‘pride and joy’ twins, Mary (Robert) Haverstick of Leo and Janet (John Martin) Lemler of Greentown. She lived her life for her five grandchildren, Jon (Chiaki) Haverstick of Santa Ana, CA, Robin (Stephen) Snyder of Auburn, Jenny Haverstick of Leo, Chanda (Thomas) Malott of Walton, Penny (Gerald) Meurer of Greentown; and 12 great grandchildren, Conner and Caitlin Haverstick, Megan, Samantha, and Olivia Snyder, Chase, Cole, Cade, and Brae Meurer, Mikaela, McKenna, and Macauley Malott. Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Blanche Frakes; sister, Dorothy Douglas; late husbands, William Herber; and Clayton L. Rice, MD.
